For me this thin book was sort of my introduction to the Japanese aesthetic. I bought it not long after arriving in Japan. Though written in the early Showa era it helped me to understand the subtleties of Japanese beauty, which is often very different from the Western ideal. Tanizaki’s wistful ruminations on the Japanese way are both enlightening and entertaining. In 1933 he was already slightly troubled by the rapid changes happening across Japan I’m not Japanese, but I somehow feel the same nostalgia for a simpler, pre-Westernized Japan as Tanizaki. Kindred spirits perhaps.

be-kyoto’s 200-year-old machiya gives me a feeling something like what Tanizaki describes in his book. I’m glad it exists.
